We have often been asked why we use the term 'Emerging Filmmakers' to describe those we hope will benefit from the exposure we can give to them.
Well, what we do is not limited to simply, young or new filmmakers. Many people who have worked in films for many years chose to try a different skill which perhaps they are not already recognised for.
Simon Moseley for example who has his film in our Showcase area has been an AD and Producer for many years, but wanted to direct his own film.
BBC Films seem to have embraced a similar principle and realised another senior filmmaker's desire for a change of angle, by signing up US screen legend Dustin Hoffman to direct a film called Quartet. The project, unveiled at the Cannes Film Festival, stars Maggie Smith, Albert Finney and Tom Courtenay and follows four former friends who split in their youth, reuniting in old age to perform an opera.
