Andrew Howe-Davies

Background: Television, Theatre and Film set design

With over 40 years experience working in all forms of design, Andrew started with a career as a  Pinewood Studios apprentice in 1967, he was  lucky enough to work with the likes of Alex Trauner on the Billy Wilder film Sherlock Holmes. Then a move to TV [BBC set design) in the early 1970’s where he spent 20 years as a designer. But his work has also consisted of commercials, theatre, interior design and corporate hospitality.

Andrew is best known for his work in comedy, the list of productions like a who's who of comedy greats:-

Some Mothers Do Av’ Em , Mr Bean, The Two Ronnies, The Russ Abbot Mad House, The Fast Show, Harry Enfield, Victoria Wood, Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy, Coupling, French and Saunders, The Vicar of Dibley, Blackadder, Little Britain, League of Gentleman and Father Ted to name but a few.

The nature of Comedy requires fast accurate decisions to meet the high demands of the ever-changing scripts. Sets that could range from a mud hut to Versailles in just two days!

One of Andrew's most enjoyable working experiences was the Eurovision song contest, a mad, OTT extravaganza, held at the NEC Birmingham, in a vast arena, requiring various purpose built back stage areas to accommodate the 25 competing countries, as well as a 200ft wide proscenium arch and staging incorporating 20 cameras. Added to that, were the heavy security issues of the day, therefore every piece of the set had to pass through a airport scanner !

Andrew is also a director of his own companies,  Stockyard [www.stockyard.tv] is a large architectural prop house supplying the film and tv industry and also RDW Scenery Construction, these now keep him reasonably busy, so he says!
